Living in the 'harret el yahud', the Jewish poor quarter, Rahhel is trapped into a marriage with a rich high-ranking Egyptian officer through the help of a marriage broker used to catering for important people. The protection of this officer according to Rahhel’s mother will shield the family from the crowds maddened by the future birth of the State of Israel.

Suzy Vidal se sert de sa fine connaissance de la société égyptienne à la fois cosmopolite et nationaliste, pour décrire la détresse d’une famille juive se battant pour survivre après la mort du père. Cette détresse contraint la belle Rahel à renier ses origines et à épouser un officier égyptien haut placé. Rahel, devenue Amal, lors de son mariage mènera une double vie. Aux côtés de son époux elle sera une princesse de conte de fée et aux côtés d’un ami d’enfance elle sera un agent secret sioniste. Et puis… je ne vous en dirai pas plus.
